The Solution
There Is A Solution And Your Input Can Help
“At Durham Youth Housing and Support Services (DYHSS) we focus on solutions; we are working to gain public and local community support to develop an emergency shelter and transitional housing with supportive services for youth in Durham Region.”
All homeless people, regardless of age, have one thing in common - a lack of permanent, affordable housing. Though we can debate what has caused the dramatic increase in the number of people without it, access to housing is still the first step in dealing with the problem and helping to break the cycle of homelessness.
DYHSS believes there are three prerequisites to breaking the cycle:
- All homeless people, including youth, require adequate, permanent, affordable housing
- All need enough money to live on (a job, job training, adequate social assistance or pension)
- Some need support services for health, mental health, addictions, or simply to help recover from a long period of being homeless
While the causes of the youth homelessness are complex; the solution however could be at hand. Housing, income and, for some, support services are required. The services required depend upon the unique individual circumstances of each homeless person.
Everyone can help. If you have an idea, want to sign up to receive regular e-mails or join the Youth Advisory Council so you too can help make a difference to homeless and at-risk youth in the Durham Region, please send us an email.
